An aptronym is a name that’s particularly apt, or peculiarly suited to the owner. It’s not to be confused with nominative determinism, which is similar, but theoretical. Why is this important? Because just perhaps, ‘Volkswagen’ is the perfect aptronym.
In 1937, the year that Volkswagen was founded, the term “people’s car” was already in use, but it was just that, a generic term being used by a number of manufacturers to describe simple & cheap car design and production for the masses. It was the German Labour Front that decided to take that term, and use it to name their new car.
Volkswagen (People’s Car) was born.
Today, it seems that Volkswagen deserves that name more than ever, for it’s the largest car maker (by sales) in the world. It truly is a car for the people.
Most manufacturers try and offer something for everyone, they’re trying to win a customer for life, regardless of how your lifestyle works, they can offer a car to match, and realistically, no one does this better than Volkswagen.
Currently, they have fifteen different models to choose from (not including the differing power options), and these cover everything from small city car, through to large SUV; quite literally a car for every lifestyle. And that’s also before we include things like pick-up trucks, which are becoming evermore popular.
Of course, at the heart of the VW stable is the Golf – a 45-year-old veteran of the marque, but it never seems out of date, or long in the tooth. It could be said that any new developments or technology always get the Golf seal of approval first, before finding its way to the other models.
But Volkswagen are shifting slightly, they’ve gone from function & form, to something that includes a little more fun, something with a bit more … lifestyle-oriented design, such as the T-Cross and the Up!
People buy Volkswagens because they’re solid, reliable, and dependable, without being over-the-top in the styling department, but with the ability to fit right in. Whether that’s at a country house hotel, parked on a suburban street or full of friends heading for a night out, a Volkswagen never seems out of place.
And that’s a rare quality for any vehicle.
It’s easy to define the stereotypical VW owner, it’s you, your boss, her son, his girlfriend, her grandmother; it’s everyone. They’re as class-less as they are classy, and that’s why it’s almost impossible to define the models for a certain demographic.
Sure, the Passat makes a great business saloon, but then so does the Arteon. With that said, if you turned up at corporate headquarters in a Golf you’d be marked out as someone with an eye for quality and detail, a Touareg tells people you’re at the top of your game.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to Volkswagen customers, aside from the common understanding that they appreciate more, and Volkswagen understand that – in the advertising campaign for the new T-Cross, their slogan was “I am more”, #morethan1thing
As we’ve already pointed out, there are no ‘typical’ buyers for Volkswagen, so rather than trying to match you to a car, here’s what the models offer, and you can decide which one takes your fancy.
