It’s easy to get a little confused with all the latest terminology from the automotive world, we have BEV, PHEV, Hybrid, Mild-Hybrid, ICE, HEV, and FCEV. There are possibly more acronyms in the waiting, but for now, we think that’s enough.
With that said, some of those terms encompass others, and some are just fancy names for what we already know – ICE just means Internal Combustion Engine, so your regular fossil-fuelled car, and the rest … we’ll add them at the end, IF you want to read them.
For now, all that concerns us is the PHEV – Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, because ŠKODA are now offering their aptly named SUPERB as a hybrid.
We’re huge fans of ŠKODA, since being bought by the Volkswagen Group, they have consistently improved and updated their models, reliability, values (both financial and societal) and offerings – you’d be hard pushed to find a match in other brands. (although of course the VW Group also own Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, and SEAT amongst others).
The ŠKODA SUPERB iV is ŠKODA’s first model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines the best of electric and conventional technology for an eco-friendly yet dynamic drive. As ŠKODA themselves say – “The brilliant SUPERB, only more so.”
To prove just how good the SUPERB PHEV is, it has scooped a brace of awards at the What Car? Electric Car Awards 2020, including: Electric car, Best Estate Car, Best PHEV for less than £30,000, and Best Executive Car for less than £30,000.
To make life easier, there are three driving modes – E-Mode gives full-electric running, with a range of up to 37 miles from the 13kWh battery, Hybrid uses the combination of both petrol and electric motor (independently, or combined), and Sport unleashes the full 218PS (around 215 horsepower) for the full affect. Once the battery is discharged, it can be recharged using a domestic 3-pin plug socket (taking around five hours), or through a 3.6kW wallbox, which gives a 100% charge in just three and a half hours. All cables are included (as is the storage!).
With a full charge, and sensible right foot, the range can be maxed out to 578 miles using both sources of power, so range anxiety is never going to be a thing to upset you either. This really is the best of both worlds.
Just four trim levels are available: SE Technology, SE L, SportLine Plus, and L&K (in a nod to the original founders – Laurin & Klement).We say ‘just’ four, but in our minds, that’s a good thing – it makes it simpler to understand what you’re getting, and of course increases the standard equipment offered across the board.
Of course there’s a plethora of well-thought out safety equipment and technology, such as front and rear parking sensors, 3rd generation infotainment system, Virtual Cockpit, Lane Assist and CareConnect (inc Emergency Call), but there’s also some great upgrades like the Area View camera.
There’s also an ‘e-noise’ generator that creates the sound of a conventional engine (when running on electric) up to speeds of 32 mph, as a safety feature – so pedestrians can still hear you coming.
The ŠKODA SUPERB PHEV really is … dare we say it (yes) … superb.
It offers all the practicality that you need, the 37 mile electric range is enough for the average commute (research tells us that the average commute is 25 miles), 215 horsepower gives great motorway cruising, the styling is absolutely right, and then of course there is the pièce de resistance; the price.
