Volkswagen have had one of the best-selling commercial vans for years, in fact the Transporter has been in constant production for over 70-years now, and it remains consistently, and constantly popular due to their ever watchful eye on updating it.
The latest Transporter, the T6.1 Panel Van, is the benchmark in commercial vehicles, as Volkswagen themselves say: the icon, updated.
The latest iteration has a redesigned front end and interior, more space than ever before, and total connectivity.
There are two models available, the Startline, and the Highline, and there’s two different wheelbase lengths, and two rooflines, making the T6.1 pretty versatile, not only that, but VWCV say that thanks to the technology crammed in, it’s the safest and easiest to drive Transporter ever.
Maximum load space is 9.3m3, which is just about enough for three Euro pallets. It has a low rear sill to aid loading, and the rear opens up to 1,473mm, either through a large tailgate, or rear wing doors. And storage in the back isn’t the only well-thought-out feature.
Upfront, you’ll find a host of useful storage and features, from USB-C ports to plenty of storage – underseat, lockable lower glovebox, separate upper glovebox, folding ruler tray, two dash mounted cup holders, and of course, full LED lighting throughout, including the load space.
When it comes to technology and driver aids, commercial vehicles are no longer second best – the T6.1 is crammed full of driver aids, which is why Volkswagen Commercial say it’s their easiest to drive van.
Systems such as Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Driver Steering Recommendation, Crosswind Assist, Lane Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and Trailer Assist all go to make the Transporter super safe, and in the even of an accident, there are safety systems such as side protection to minimise the danger.
Keeping with the technology theme … if conventional fossil fuel isn’t your thing, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also offer a fully electrified Transporter – the ABT e-Transporter, developed in conjunction with ABT Sportsline, a German motorsport company with enough pedigree to put Crufts to shame.
It has a range of 84 miles (with a bigger battery & range promised for later models), a 6.7m 3 load space, and payload of up to 996Kg. Of course, it still comes with the same tech available in the conventional T6.1, but just more of it.
It’s easy for us to tell you that the Transporter T6.1 makes sense, both commercially and financially, but perhaps you’d be interested to know that the What Car? Van Awards 2021 voted the Transporter 6.1 as ‘Best Value for Ownership Costs’ – not something that the other commercial vehicle beginning with T can lay claim to.
