2021 A Great Year in the Making: Audi e-tron GT Prototype

13 January 2021

As you’d possibly expect, with the new year comes to reference to the outgoing year, and that’s particularly the case after that year. You can’t move for people saying “let’s hope 2021 is better than 2020”, and we can tell you for a fact, that it will be.

Why such certainty?

2021 is the year that Audi returns to their best: the e-tron GT prototype will be launched in the Spring.

Audi e-tron GT Prototype

Technical details are limited right now – we suspect so as to keep the competition in the dark as much as anything, but Audi have hinted (OK, they’ve shouted it from the rooftops) that this will be the electric performance car that just hasn’t quite materialised so far, from any of the manufacturers.

Could Audi be the first to get the recipe just right? If looks are anything to go by, undoubtedly.

You only need to look through some of the highlights from the e-tron GT page to understand what Audi are aiming for:

“Quite simply the living embodiment of the Audi philosophy of progress”, “every inch an Audi performance model”, and “a new kind of electric car.”

A Thousand Words

We’d love to be able to give you the full run down on technical specifications, but in all honesty, the old adage of ‘a picture paints a thousand words’ is superbly apt. Looking at the pictures of the GT prototype, you can see that Audi have one thing in mind – performance.

You could easily imagine the GT prototype sat in the garage at Le Mans, pit crew attending to the tyres, motor cooling down, but instead of a quick-fill fuel stop, batteries are conditioned and recharging.

Electric GT Car

The electric market is expanding, most manufacturers have an electric car or two, or at least use hybrid technology, but for the main part, they’re trying to capture the widest market possible, so tend to make their cars appealing to a wide range of buyers. Audi have committed to making a road-friendly electric GT car, and given their history, you’d be foolish to bet against them succeeding.

A Grand Tourer should offer sporty performance, enough room for some light luggage, and style in abundance, the GT prototype is exactly that.
