Modern slavery statement

This statement is made pursuant to section 54(1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015[1] and constitutes our Group’s slavery and human trafficking statement for the financial year ended 31 December 2018.

Structure, business and supply chains

Helston Garages Group is a private, family owned company.Together with subsidiary companies* the group operates 37 motor dealerships in the South West of England representing 14 manufacturer partners, each operating under a franchise agreement. We sell new and used cars with associated accessory, finance and insurance products along with a full range of aftersales services such as servicing, mechanical and body repair, sale of spare parts and fuel.During 2018 the company sold goods and services to the value of £620 million, employing an average of 1,130 staff during the year.

Policies in relation to slavery and human trafficking

Family values, including treating others with respect and acting with fairness, honesty and integrity, are held dear by the board and we are therefore committed to preventing acts of modern slavery and human trafficking from occurring both within the group and its supply chains. We expect and require the same standards from our suppliers.

Considering the risk of slavery and human trafficking taking place in our business and supply chain and diligence undertaken

2018 Operating expenditure totalled £606 million, broadly split as follows:

91% purchase of new and used vehicles and spare parts
5% employment costs
4% other costs
In respect of each of the 3 categories identifies above:

New and used vehicles and spare parts - as a franchisee, the majority of the supplies are obtained from motor manufacturer partners.Even used cars, often bought in part exchange from private customers, were initially produced by a motor manufacturer. Each of our manufacturer partners have complex international supply and production chains, making it virtually impossible for motor retailers/franchise holders to check and requiring us to rely on each manufacturers commitment to anti-slavery and human trafficking measures as set out in their own Modern Slavery statements.
Employment costs - we ensure that our employee pay structure honours national living/minimum wage rates and employees are expected to act with honesty and integrity at all times.
Other costs - represent a small proportion of our supply chain and represent thousands of suppliers, therefore representing smaller value risks. We will continue to monitor suppliers within this part of our supply chain to ensure that our controls are proportionate with the risk, including seeking assurance from suppliers where a higher risk may exist due to the nature of their business.
