The Award Winning Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover have scooped yet another award for one of their products, except this time, it isn’t about beauty or styling like the [Range Rover Velar], this award is all about man’s best friend – the 2018 Discovery has been awarded the Most Dog Friendly Car of the Year. (Yes, there really is such an award).

The award really just confirms that Land Rover’s ethos of ‘the ultimate family vehicle’ is paying dividends for them, and that they’re succeeding in dominating the market; it’s no longer about the best 4x4xFar (although of course, they are), but rather a change in the whole design and thought process – to make the best family vehicle for everyday use.

Brief History

Land Rover introduced the Discovery back in 1989, it bridged the gap between the hardcore workhorse that was the Defender, and the ultimate posh-roader that is the Range Rover. Estimates put the number sold from 1989 to 2017 at around 1.2 million, making it one of the best-selling vehicles in the Land Rover stable

Whilst you can clearly see the heritage of the Disco throughout the lines and the styling, Land Rover completely restyled the Discovery for the fifth-generation model, giving it a more rounded (yet ultimately less practical) style.

On the whole, the new style seems to be well received, but after talking with some customers, there might be a ‘marmite’ element to it – no middle ground.Brief History

Dog Friendly

If you’re wondering just what sets the Discovery apart from the competition, at least when it comes to being dog friendly, the answer is down to ‘lifestyle engineering’, something that Land Rover are masters in.

There are three optional ‘pet packs’ available:

  • Pet Load Space Protection Pack
Consisting of: Quilted load space liner, full-height luggage partition and a spill-resistant water bowl
  • Pet Transportation Pack
Consisting of: Foldable pet carrier, spill-resistant water bowl and load space rubber matt
  • Pet Care and Access Pack
Consisting of: Full-height luggage partition, quilted load space liner, pet access ramp and pet shower

Of course, being pet friendly, or even family friendly, is more than a few stylised accessories, the driving force behind the Discovery is all about family – being able to seat seven adults comfortably, having over 2,400 litres of luggage space, the world’s first ‘intelligent seat folding technology’, a towing capacity of 3,500kg, 9 USB ports and semi-autonomous safety technology… the new Discovery has it all.

Powertrain

In the age of CO2 and emissions-based taxing, we’re used to being offered numerous choices for what fits under the bonnet – the Range Rover Velar for example has six different choices of engine, the Disco has just three: 2.0 litre 240hp diesel automatic, 2.0 litre 300hp petrol auto and the 3.0 litre 306hp V6 diesel.

It's clear that none of these packages will leave you wanting, even in a vehicle such as the Discovery, 240hp is sufficient, but of course with a diesel it’s all about the torque; 430Nm, or in old money, that equates to nearly 320ft/lb. The 3.0 litre V6 diesel is even more impressive – 700Nm (516ft/lb). With that sort of torque, you could almost tow the world, or at least a small county.

The new generation Discovery really is all things to all people; it makes for an excellent family car, gives you the ride and build quality that you’d expect from Land Rover, enough off-road capability to satisfy all but the most demanding of drivers, and of course, the kind of styling that can’t go un-missed.
