Ferrari’s new eight-cylinder sports car caused quite a stir when it debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. It is powered by a 570 CV 4,499 cc V8 engine – named as International Engine of the Year 2011. With the power and its lightweight aluminium chassis combined, the vehicle can achieve acceleration of 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 199mph.
In a first for any mid-rear engine two-seater sports car, the 458 Spider features a retractable aluminium hard-top roof, which is 25kg lighter than the traditional folding soft-top, lets in considerably less outside noise, and takes just 14 seconds to open and close. Moreover, the hard-top takes up a very small amount of storage space, allowing Ferrari’s designers to enlarge the luggage space behind the rear seats.
Aside from its fantastic performance, the 458 Spider is also very fuel efficient and environmentally friendly compared to its contemporaries, giving 23.9mpg and 275g/km of CO2 emissions respectively.
